The main character begins at an inn located in the city of Waterdeep. The story begins when they wake up to find that a Drow has stolen their equipment. Later on in this chapter, they will have the ability to get that equipment back. After they go downstairs and talk with Durnan, the owner of the Inn, they will be attacked by a party of Drow. They are then left to either go into the well where the rest of the drow are, rest, or they can recruit Deekin (whom is nearby) as a henchman. Once they go down into the well, they are confronted by more drow and they will fight them alongside Daelen Red Tiger, Sharwyn, Linu and Tomi. Once the fighting is stopped and Durnan has closed up the well, a Beholder attacks Durnan, and everyone except the player and Durnan gives chase to the Beholder.
Once the player's character regain conicousness, they will then be directed to White Thesta to gain a Rod of Resurrection. She will then allow the player to see her wares. Then the player can either go directly into Undermountain or go into Waterdeep (some drugar will be there) and buy some supplies. There are two additional stores with two cabinets the player can loot if they have a high enough Pick Lock score.
Once the player descends into the well, they will be greeted by a goblin that wants the player to help him back up the well due to all the fighting. The goblin mentions that there is a fairy and an ogre down there that are fighting. To descend further into Undermountain, the player will need to enter the fairy's and the ogre's area. A few steps after you enter the gate into Undermountain the player will find Sharwyn. The player will then have the opportunity to revive her and have her added to their party.
In the Hall of Mirrors, the player will find Daelean Red Tiger dead. The player can resurrect him and add him to their party.
In the Hall of Sleeping Kings, there is a talking sword named Enserric.
In Level 2 of Undermountain the player will have to find 4 chains to unlock the passage to the third level of Undermountain. The first chain will be on the corpse of a goblin that is being chased by the Drow. This goblin will be friendly so that is kind of an indicator.
When the player is transported to the temple of the Seer, they will be greeted by the Seer and they will be informed about the situation with the Valsharess.
The only way to get the Ilthid to retract their support of the Valsharess is to give them a mirror that the player can acquire in Shiori's Fell.
Mephistopheles banishes the Player character (PC) to Cania, the Eighth Level of Hell. In the City of Lost Souls, the PC is confronted by the riddles of the Scrivener and the Sleeping Man. The PC learns of the history of the original inhabitants of Cania, the Knowers. Finding the Knower of Placers leads to finding the Knower of Names. The Knower of Names gives the PC the True Name of the Reaper, who guards the portal to leave Cania. Compelling the Reaper by its True Name, the PC returns to Waterdeep to face Mephistopheles in battle.
There are several epilogues to The Horders of the Underdark, but Mephistopheles is expelled from Faerûn in all cases. The different epilogues depend on the PC's companions, his/her actions in Chapter 2, and how he/she dispatches Mephistopheles.
BioWare and Neverwinter Vault ran a contest for user-created modules to continue to the story of the protagonist of Hordes of the Underdark.
